The specific aims of the group are to actively engage the local community in gathering historical information about Barkway, by working with the community to gather oral memories and by obtaining pictorial and other written records
The information collected is designed to promote awareness, increase the understanding of and to assist in protecting and maintaining Barkway’s heritage and history by the local community.
This will be achieved by using the Group’s website, publishing articles and features in the parish magazine, by displays in public buildings and at local society meetings
A permanent record of local history will be created, which can be enjoyed freely by the local community and others interested in the history of the village, enabling it to be passed on to subsequent generations.
The Group is managed by a committee of no more than eight persons and is based in Barkway's Reading Room, where regular meetings will be held. Understanding that other areas of use of the Reading Room were being looked at, the Group proceeded to negotiate with the Parish Council to allow them to use the room for their headquarters. It would then be a centre for the display of photos and holding historic documents, and would form a local venue for study and research. The room will also be a focal point for relevant, gathered information to be displayed and this will be available to the community at certain published times.
